Peguis Treaty Days, Pow Wow, and the 5 Dollar Give Away

As new comers to the week long events, we drive through rows of cars, trailer in tow, and wonder where to set up. There are tents and trailers scattered throughout the site, a mid way, rows of vendors, and the Pow Wow site arena. The curved lines of the structure beside the streamline trailer contrast the square wood lean-to’s that are named Texas Hold ‘Em, Granny’s Kitchen, and The Projects (this last one is empty), which are temporary structures, like ours, that sell delicious pickerel, fried bread, and glow in the dark novelties.

We settle on a spot up near the baseball diamonds. Beside our site the sacred fire burns on, as it will for the duration of the Pow Wow. The big drum beats and the singing groups from different regions take turns leading the dancers through song. Watching the dancers do the chicken dance (male), grass dance, and jingle dance (female) I sat beside the Peguis singing group, Loud Eagle, and soaked in the experience through the reverberating stands into my body. As the sun set, the singing groups seemed to get louder, their competition a sensory contrast and companion to the dancing competition. The over-stimulation of the events—a country band playing inside a caged band stand; the Pow Wow; the midway with its carnival lights, noise, rides, prizes and candy, and the kids running around it all.

So there we were, a silver bullet and Lancelot’s structure set up in between the Pow Wow grounds, eagle feather head dresses piled upon fence posts, and the midway carnival, pumping pop music. We are welcomed to the community by elders and we are honoured to be a part of this event. Day one, Jason and his son Willie are handed a five dollar bill, “from the Chief”, and day two three amazingly talented young women sit with Natasha and I, making collages and sharing stories. Day three, we dress up in face paint and Abzurb costumes and join in the 10 car parade around the grounds. Thank you Peguis, for sharing this celebration and tradition and reminding elders, children, and visitors of the road upon which we all ride, dance, or sing.

Please come and help us celebrate the completion of a successful project organized by five artist run centre's in Winnipeg. The Airstream trailer will be parked outside of the Art Space building, and Lancelot Coar along with some fantastic volunteers will erect the structure in Old Market Square.

The Closing Party will include performances by the abzurbs, films from the Video Pool Vault and much more...

Refreshments will be served

On The Road is generously funded by Winnipeg Arts Council’s Audience Development Grant as well as the Visual Arts Assistance Program through Manitoba Culture, Heritage, and Tourism.

On the Road/En route Reflections...

On the Road/En route is a much anticipated project that brings art to the public through the erection of an innovative, temporary architecture. Lancelot Coar and his team have spent the past two weeks experimenting with the design of the structure, and have recently actualized the first two site-specific events.

To date, the On the Road experience has been an eye-opening one. It has been interesting to see the wide range of people who become intrigued and attracted to this unconventional architecture that has temporarily integrated itself into their community.

The process of designing and constructing the structure has also been challenging. Unlike traditional building practices, considerations regarding simplicity, time, and ease of assembly have been driving forces for conceiving the design.

Most inspiring, has been experiencing the architectural process from realization to disassembly in the span of a day. The bringing to life of the structure becomes an integral part of the days events, involving and engaging with the communities we visit.

About On The Road/En route

A 1976 AirStream Trailer will be the shining, silver heart of ON THE ROAD, a rip-roaring contemporary art project led by artist and architect Lancelot Coar. Branching from the trailer will be a huge, spidery, fiberglass and fabric frame that will, with your help, morph into beautiful, strange structures to house a temporary art space to which Lancelot invites you to take part in a happy-making art activities. Within the special structure that he designed and constructed for you, he will showcase videos by Manitoban artists, lead making&doing workshops, and perform with The Abzurbs, a group of mayhem music makers. The community is warmly invited to help raise the structure and make it their own for the duration of ON THE ROAD’S stay, and to be the blood that brings this art body to life.
